Episode 10

I called a coworker and told him I will be absent from work for two days because of some emergency. He said my husband was the right person to grant me permission and not him. I hanged up and became more confused. Two days later, I returned to Ho. I got home only to see that Benson's mother was back. But why was this woman back? I asked myself. I went to greet her and she said she was not ready for my greetings. She said I should tell her why I left the town for two days without even going to work and no permission either. I said "in-law please let me explain." I turned my back and here comes Benson's father. Oh my God! Am doomed. "Was it that Benson called his parents and informed them about what was going on? Ah! but he should have allowed me to explain things to him first." I said to myself. My mouth just locked at the time I saw his father. Not knowing it was only his mother that was aware of what was going on. I was on my knees when the man came. He said "my daughter why are you kneeling down in front of your mother in-law?" Benson bypassed his father and was about to enter into his room when his father stopped him. He said "Benson why is your wife kneeling down and crying?" Benson said "Daddy this lady is evil. She just came into this house for reasons best known to she and her family. His mother stood up and went into her room. She didn't want to hear what I was about to say. His father came to sit down and said, "my daughter stop crying and tell me what the problem is. Besides you know I travelled a long journey so I wanted some rest so go ahead and tell me what it is so that I see what I can do about it". It was just as if the container keeping my tears got burst. The tears was just flowing like the speed way of a dam. I gathered courage and said "Daddy am sorry I lied to this family. I lied to mom and also to my husband. I told mom that I aborted the pregnancy that I had during my high school days. It was true that I was ~*raped*~ by my teacher and got pregnant but I gave birth to the child and because I feared that Benson as a young guy won't be ready to marry a born-one, I lied to them that I aborted the baby. Now my husband got to know of that secret and informed mom about it. That is what I was trying to explain before you came." My father in-law was silent for some time and called Benson to come. He came and his father said why didn't he allow me to express myself to him before his reactions? Benson wanted to talk but his father interrupted and said "take your wife to the room and sort things out with her. You are a man now try to handle some of these issues by yourself. Hold her hand and take her inside. I heard her story so let her explain to you". He stood up and went to join his wife in the room. Benson was standing looking into my face. I said "please let me explain. I love you and don't want you to leave me that was why I was hiding my treasure which is my son away from you. Benson told me that every one who tells lies in the name of protecting himself or herself is capable of killing a person. You lied to me and my entire family. Yes it's true I wedded you with much money but I don't care about that. For now I want to be myself for some time so I want you to distant yourself from me for some time. I will call you when am ok". I tried begging but he just went back into his room. I sat there for some few minutes and left to my apartment there at Ho. I went to work the following day only to be handed a letter. I opened it and oh! I was fired. The charge was that I absent myself from work for two days without permission from anybody and the letter was signed by Benson. Hmm, I called Benson and he said it was management decision and he only signed as the manager. I quickly took a taxi and went to his house. I thought I will meet him and his father but his mother told me they travelled to Accra for a meeting and besides that was why his father came back to Ghana. Not knowing, Benson told his father that all was well with us. I showed the letter to my mother in-law and she said I have disappointed her. She said she lost all the trust she had for me because I could look into her face and lie to her. She also added that what shows I won't sell his son ;Benson and tell her that he is missing? I went on my knee and asked her to have mercy on me. She said she heard I now have a super market of my own so she said I was aware that the marriage won't last that was why I built that shop to feed on when the time comes. Anyway, I was surprised because I knew her to be a cool lady. This made me to understand that when trust is broken, it becomes difficult to repair. Even if you try repairing it, it will never be like the first trust. In the process of begging her to forgive me, my phone rang and it was Enyonam. She said Alex was still not fit so they were planning of taking him back to the hospital. Benson came to the house without his father so I went to him to plead for forgiveness. He said he has not divorced me he only said I should give him some time for him to reorganize himself. I told him that I needed to go back to Akatsi since I was fired from work and my son was still not feeling fine. He said I will hear from him later and moved out on me. I picked my hand bag and off I left the house looking so worried and sorrowful. I went to pick some belongings of mine and the following day I left Ho to Akatsi. My father shed tears when he saw me. He opened his alms and gave me a hug. I told him Benson said I should give him some time to reorganize himself before deciding on whether he should continue to have me as a wife or not. I also showed him the letter. My father said, "my daughter, don't worry. If he really loves and deserves you, he will come back for you. Don't let his money deceive you. Thank your God that you have your own super market now. Take good care of it and look after your son to grow and become a responsible person. You went through a lot my daughter but I want to tell you that never give up because the God we worship is watching over us". The words from my father touched me so much because he never spoke to me like that before. I asked him where my step mother was and he said she went to her boutique. Alex was sleeping so I didn't try disturbing him. I thanked Enyonam for all that she did for me. The following day I took Alex back to the hospital and he was given additional medicines. I realized that the sickness was due to how he missed me. After some few days, he was fine and went back to school. My step mother was always doing things to find my trouble even after her fucking mess-up that had landed me in this shit but I decided not to mind her. After all, I need my enemies to be healthy so that when the Lord blesses me, they will be able to come and watch the table that the Lord will lay for me in their presence. I didn't try to play any blame game because I blamed myself for everything . I was given the opportunity and I messed it up. Everyday, I go to my super market to do my sales and I employed Enyonam to help me at the super market. I was expecting my menses to come at the end of the month but it didn't come. I thought maybe I lost focus of my counting so I relaxed. Halfway into the next month which was February and still there was no sign of my menses. I went to the hospital to check and it was revealed that I was pregnant. My biggest worry was how to get Benson informed. Reason being that he does not pick my calls. And even if he should pick how will he react? Won't he think that it was one of my plans of getting his attention? I asked myself. I thought of telling his mother but will she believe me? Another blow to me again. I told my father about it and he said I should go to Ho and give the test results to him. I saw that to be a good idea. The following day I sent him a text message that I wanted to see him because I have a good news for him. He replied and said "to hell with your good news. Please stop disturbing". I sent another one telling him direct that I was pregnant for him. I was expecting another reply but it never came. I made my father aware of my efforts and he kept on encouraging me. My super market was also running well. It was one of the busy super markets in town. I was at the super market one day and a man came along with a young lady. The man's face looked a bit familiar but I was not sure of who he was. I was very querulous so I pretend to check something from the lane they were walking. I got closer and the young man mentioned my name with a surprised look. Dzigbordi!! I stood and looked into his face more. The lady with him asked "do you two know yourselves somewhere?" The young man said, "Dzigbordi it's me Amenyo from SOGASCO". I said "what!! Amenyo is this you? hmm this world is a small place. What are you doing here? He said his fiance who was the lady with hi! was a student of Akatsi college of Education so he came to visit her and he wanted to buy some provisions for her before leaving. "Oh like seriously?" I asked. He excused the lady and held my hands and said he want us to get a good place to talk. Hmm, everything that goes around comes around. I took him to my table. He asked what I was doing there. To him I was working as an attendant. I told him the super market belongs to me. He said that was nice. I asked him where he was and he said he was working as a people teacher. He asked about my pregnancy which led to my suspension and dropping out of school. I asked him whether he really care to know. I said "Amenyo, I did my best to prevent your parents from punishing you and bared the cost by leaving school. You turned your back on me by changing your number and even blocked me from your Facebook account. Today you are here asking about the pregnancy. If I were to die would you have come to ask this silly question? Please don't make me feel bad today. Already my problems are bigger than me and I don't want to add to it." The lady he came with walked closer to us and said she wanted to leave. I smiled at the lady and told her to always come and buy at my place. I asked Amenyo to leave because his fiance wanted to leave. He asked for my number and I called Enyonam to give him our customer care line. Why should I give him my personal line? This world is indeed a small village. You can run but you can't hide forever.

Will Benson forgive me for the sake of the pregnancy? What will Amenyo do? will I see Lynnell again? Let's go to the next episode.
