Benson told them that I was the lady he wanted to marry. He made them to understand that I passed a test he set for me by sleeping at my place. He said he was expecting me to either sack him or seduce him but I didn't do anything of that sort. I just opened my eyes wide and was shocked that it was a trap. He said many good things about me. Later, his mother called me to her room and asked me to tell her everything about myself. Oh my God. What was this woman expecting from me? I became uneasy within myself because I didn't know what to say. She noticed I wasn't myself so she asked me to come and sit beside her on her bed. Benson and his father went to the mall to check out things so it was just the two of us left in the house. She said "my daughter I was once a lady like you. I passed through a lot before coming out to become who I am now. Just feel free, besides with the look of things my son loves you and we have also accepted you so feel free and talk to me. I'm not as scary as you might be thinking ". I just saw my mother in her with the way she spoke to me and that made me to gather some courage to talk. Her words were so touching but I was scared to tell her about Alex my son. I started by telling her how my mother died when I was 12 years of age. I shed tears at the time I was talking about my mother. I went on by telling her how my stepmother was trying to make me drop out of school and then to how my dad became employed and sent me to school. I made her to know how intelligent I was. She was happy to hear about how intelligent I was and said his son should be lucky. Then she came in and asked why I didn't continue with my education but rather preferred to work as a mall attendant. I told her I couldn't complete my SHS because of some one or two reasons. She said I should tell her what went wrong. I told her it was a long story. She asked whether I got pregnant on my way. That question hit me hard like Muhammad Ali's punch. My head still bowed down, I said "mum not really. I dropped out of school because my teacher raped me at his bungalow and I became pregnant. The teacher refused responsibility and the disciplinary committee including my father suspended me when I was a week to register for our WASSCE. Because I don't want to be a single mother I aborted the three months old pregnancy " *I lied*. She felt very sorry of me and used her cloth to wipe my tears. I went on to tell her how my father sacked me from his house to how Kelly ran away with my money and then how I came to Ho. After telling her what I have to say she encouraged me and promised that she will make sure her son takes good care of me. I asked her if there was something I should do for her but she said there was nothing. I asked for permission to leave to my house but she said I should wait for Benson to come so that he drops me with his car. I told her I could go alone. In fact I never knew I had that respectful life. The way i was responding hmmm, people can really change and am a living testimony. I left the house feeling very guilty of myself. I lied to this woman so what was I going to do with Alex. But I love my son too. I started thinking seriously. "How long can I hide my son? Am I going to abandon him? What exactly am I going to do? Now this rich family has accepted me as one of their own how am I going to manage this? "Those were some of things going through my mind. Before I realized I was in the middle of the road. A car nearly walked over me. Luckily for me I came back to myself and gave way to the car. I was very confused. When i got home, I went to my room and straight to bed. I didn't just know what to do myself. Some few minutes later, Benson called and asked if I got home safely. I told him how nice his mother was. He was also happy to hear that. He said his father complimented me for my beauty when they were away. He said his father also want to see me before he leaves for Nigeria. I told him I was shy but that was just by the way. Weekend came and I went back to Akatsi where my son was. Upon seeing him tears engulfed my eyes. I asked myself that what wrong have this small boy done to deserve all this from me? He needs motherly care but look at how things are now moving? Alex ran and came to hug me. I carried him and realized he had some cut on the face. I asked him what happened and all he was did was to mention Auntie. I went to the kitchen to see Enyonam the lady taking care of my step mother's daughter as well as my son. I asked what happened to Alex and she said it was my step mother that canned him for breaking her dressing mirror she use to put inside her hand bag. Hmmm, I became quiet for sometime and asked of my father. She said he and my stepmother had gone to greet some bereaved family in town. I called Enyonam to my room and gave her Ghc200.00 as a 'thank you' for taking care of Alex for me. She was very excited because she never dreamt of getting that money. I then told her that I have some information for her. I told her about Benson and his plans of marrying me. I told her that I lied to his family that I have no child so I want her to take Alex as her son. I will provide her with everything that she would need. I told her that I will arrange my former house for her so that anytime Benson and his family comes around she would take Alex with her to that place and stay until they leave. As time goes on I will introduce her to Alex as my cousin. Then maybe later in life the truth will be told. Enyonam got frightened and said she can't do what I was asking for because it was a great risk I was putting her into. I gave her more reasons why she needed to do that for me. I promised her of good things. Eventually she accepted my offer. I thanked her so much. The interesting thing was that I never planned that before coming but the idea just came as I got to the house. Well, I was betraying my only son. My father and Maame Irene returned from town and officially informed them about Benson's intention. My stepmother asked me if I had informed Benson that I was a 'born-one'. I told them I didn't but pleaded with them to cover me up for some time so that at the appropriate time, I will tell him. I pleaded with them not to make Benson hear of this. My dad said I should have informed him first so that if he truly loves me he will demonstrate it. My stepmother said I should note that I was not the person going to turn her into someone who tell lies. She said I better tell the man about Alex because she was not ready to tell lies. All I could do was to cry. I went on my knees and begged them. Myself father held never to stand up and asked me what exactly I want them to do for me. I told them the arrangements I've had with Enyonam. Come and see my stepmother; she won't allow someone's daughter take such a risk. My father called her wife into their room to deliberate on what to do. They came back and my father said I shouldn't worry and that they will help cover me. He said they will support Enyonam to do as planned. My stepmother stood up and left us saying she was not part of the arrangement. My daddy asked me not to worry for he will talk to her. I thanked my dad so much and wished my mother was alive. Now I think all was ready to go. I showed great care to Alex before leaving after the weekend. At Ho, I went to see Benson's father who was getting ready to leave. He said her wife said a lot about me to her and my story touched his heart so would like to change my status so that my enemies get ashamed. He said he made arrangements with the management of the mall to promote me to a higher position. He said if I remain a good girl he will buy me a car after our marriage. Eeii! I couldn't imagine myself driving my own car. My respectful nature got activated and I thanked him so much. I also promised of being a good girl. "Oh my God! how will I explain myself when the truth is revealed " I nearly vomited the truth but I was able to control myself. Everyday after work, I do come to cook for his mother before going back to my house. Because of the presence of Benson's mother, sex was always at my place. Benson was a darling. All these while Alex was on my mind. Weekend came and Benson traveled to Akatsi with me. He went to see my father and introduced himself officially to them. I called in advance to get them informed before our coming so Enyonam did as I said. Thankfully, my stepmother was able to comport herself. What she did was to leave the house and returned late. Before we left on Sunday evening, Benson gave them almost Ghc500.00. My father was very happy for us. Benson also took the marriage list from my father before we left. On our way coming, Benson said that list was not expensive so he will double everything. As it is said upon everything, there are still good people on earth and Benson and his family were not an exception. I should say I met My saviour. But will this good time last? Hmm my step mother. Why should we have such people still alive? they don't appreciate good things ah!
